Tasting Notes: Russell’s Reserve 13 Year Old Spring 2025 Release

Today I was able to pick up the latest long aged Russell’s Reserve release, this one returning to a 13 year age statement but at the highest proof yet, 123.8 proof. Based on my research, this is the highest proof batch bottling by Wild Turkey ever. Earlier batches reportedly had some 15 to 20 year old barrels in them; based on my research, these whiskey is primarily 13 and 13 year old barrels. The price has increased substantially to $200, but I have spent that on Master’s Keep releases in the past and I have not been unsatisfied. This bourbon is non-chill filtered.

The color on this is a beautiful dark amber with some flecks of mahogany, reflecting its long age. The swirl reveals a very oily and rich bourbon, with big thick legs. The nose is very traditional Wild Turkey, with vanilla, cherry notes, caramelized sugar, and an earthy oaky background. The palate opens with sweet cola and molasses which is different from its predecessors, transitioning to dark fruit flavors before revealing lighter notes of cherry cobbler and butter cream. The elevated proof brings a spice-forward character that is “rough around the edges” in the style that Jimmy Russell prefers and that is definitely my jam. The finish is long and warming with mature oak, char, and deep oak spice taking center stage. A hint of black pepper provides a final flourish, while woody spice, tobacco, and cedar notes create a satisfying denouement that lingers quite long.

This is a truly excellent bourbon from Wild Turkey. Like other releases, it does not disappoint, is worth the money, and is dangerously drinkable.
