I had a hankering today to try Booker's again since I have been really enjoying cask strength bourbon lately. So I went to Hokus Pokus looking for it but they were out. But, low and behold in a box in the back were six bottles one of which was earmarked for me. I could hardly … Continue reading Knob Creek 25th Anniversary Single Barrel Cask Strength Bourbon-A Bottle of Wow

Col. E.H. Taylor Barrel Proof -all that and a bucket of Southern Classic Chicken
Uncut, unfiltered, straight from the barrel E.H. Taylor. At 128.1 proof, this is definitely heavyweight bourbon. However, compared to Stagg Jr., this Buffalo Trace expression is less oakey and really tends toward dark cane syrup or molasses. This one is really growing on me and my wife Catherine really likes it as well. Honey rather … Continue reading Col. E.H. Taylor Barrel Proof -all that and a bucket of Southern Classic Chicken
It’s a Wood Off: Woodford Reserve Double Oaked vs. Double Double Oaked
Ever since I got back from Kentucky in April I have been waiting to do this: to try the Woodford Reserve Double Double Oaked you can only get at the distillery. Of course, I wanted to compare it to the Double Oaked that is readily available. Now, I have drunk some Woodford Reserve in my … Continue reading It’s a Wood Off: Woodford Reserve Double Oaked vs. Double Double Oaked
Eagle Rare Single Barrel Select From Hokus Pokus and Stagg Jr.-Great Bottles!
It's really hard to beat a Single Barrel Select bottling of Eagle Rare. This one has this great corn syrup sweetness and slight rye spiciness that is reminiscent of Buffalo Trace's EH Taylor bourbons. This bottling has a lot of character. Glad I bought a case. I was also able to pick up some more … Continue reading Eagle Rare Single Barrel Select From Hokus Pokus and Stagg Jr.-Great Bottles!
Some thoughts on Diageo’s Orphan Barrel Bourbons
Over the last few months I have acquired three different bourbons from Diageo's Orphan Barrel series. Diageo, who also has Bulleit and Dickel in it's American stable and great scotches like Oban, is clearly trying to cash in on the Van Winkle craze by issuing some limited release (although not that limited relatively speaking) ultra … Continue reading Some thoughts on Diageo’s Orphan Barrel Bourbons
A Curated Scotch Tasting
Some friends of mine asked me to put together a curated scotch tasting for them and some of their friends. Fun for me in that I get to share my love of good whiskey with others. Below is tonight's menu. My idea was to expose them to a cross section of great Scotch whiskies and … Continue reading A Curated Scotch Tasting
Shop Local For Whiskey
I am very lucky that in the small city in Louisiana I call home we have Hokus Pokus. The owner and the store manager aim to bring top shelf bottles to Alexandria. One of the ways they bring top shelf whiskey in us to buy whole barrels of certain whiskies and have them specially bottled. … Continue reading Shop Local For Whiskey
