Bourbon Society of Baton Rouge Foundation 2024 Screw Cancer Release in Partnership with Sugarfield Spirits

My friends with the Bourbon Society of Baton Rouge sent me a sample of their 2024 Screw Cancer whiskey release produced by Sugarfield Spirits of Gonazles, LA, to review prior to the bottle release on July 20, 2024. You can purchase a bottle here but it can only be picked up at Sugarfield Spirits and they do not ship. It comes with a cool wooden collectors case and $80 of the $175 purchase price goes to Cancer Services of Baton Rouge, with this year’s proceeds specifically going to help families of victims of pancreatic cancer.

This year’s release is a blend of two bourbons; one six year old MGP bourbon finished in Cognac casks, one six year old MGP bourbon finished in sherry casks, which were then blended and finished for three months in a barrel that previously aged Sugarfield Spirit’s Honey Liqueur. This is bottled at cask strength at 114.1 proof.

The color is a nice amber with flecks of mahogany, with some big thick legs coming down from a thick film. The nose is really unique; nice undertones of vanilla, caramel, and baking spice are overlaid with fruity notes and honey. On the palate, the vanilla hits the palate first but is then joined by candied fruits, grapa notes, and sopapillas with honey. On the finish, the bourbon and oak notes are met with cloves, Peychaud bitter notes, almost like a really good old fashioned cocktail, but with some underlying smokey and leathery notes, but the clove and bitters notes become floral on the fade, along with notes of honeysuckle.

This is a very unique whiskey. I had my wife try it, and it almost represents seasonal change. At first, this is a fall and winter whiskey, but finish fades into spring like tones. Sipping on this whiskey is really like a journey for your palate. BSoBR and Sugarfield Spirits truly outdid themselves with this release.
