A good friend of mine is originally from Illinois and periodically goes to a Binny”s while he is up there seeing family. He regularly brings me back things, and one of the bottles I had him pick up is a store pick Lucky Seven Single Barrel Bourbon “The Proprietor”. This is a Kentucky Straight Bourbon made by the Bardstown Bourbon Company for Lucky Seven. This one is six years old, and seems to be barrel proof at 121.3 proof.
The color on this is a solid amber but with a good bit of mahogany, more so than I would expect for a six year old bourbon. On the swirl is a nice film with oily legs and droplets. On the nose, very traditional bourbon nose with more vanilla than caramel, some fruitiness, including a slight citrus note, and a hint of oak. On the palate, vanilla mingles with dark and citrus fruits, with a light dusting of baking spices. The mouthfeel is not syrupy but definitely full bodied. On the finish, dark fruits linger and the baking spices grow stronger that lingers for a good while.
I continue to be impressed with Bardstown Bourbon Company, both for their own brands and those produced for others, like K.Luke and Lucky Seven.
